The Democratic Party managed to limit the damage better than expected in the midterm elections, denying former President Donald Trump an electoral sweep of Republicans, bet on him to the White House.

US President Joe Biden praised the elections Wednesday, describing them as a “good day for democracy”, noting that he “intends” to run for a second term in 2024, but said he would confirm this “early next year.”

Republicans are expected to take control of the House of Representatives, but Biden said a “giant red wave” did not materialize as expected.

The US president, who is a Democrat, said he was ready to work with Republicans, adding that next week he would invite leaders of both parties to the White House to discuss how to achieve that.
