Laboratory made blood preserved at a facility in Bristol

British researchers said that blood made in a laboratory was given to humans, in the first clinical trial of its kind in the world.

Small amounts – the equivalent of two tablespoons – are tested to see how they work in the body.

The bulk of blood transfusions will always depend on regular donors.

But the ultimate goal is to manufacture vital, but extremely rare, blood types that are difficult to obtain.
