Samsung has announced the development of new RAM chips, which it calls DDR5 (DDR5), an important technology for what the company believes will be the next breakthrough for “next-generation computing.” The new chips bring more performance and energy efficiency to the chip industry, although they require an expensive EUV manufacturing process.

Samsung and AMD have completed the development of 16GB DRAM chips, which will use “the industry’s first 12nm process technology”. The Korean company describes these new chips as a “technological leap” for the industry. AMD helped evaluate the product for compatibility with CPUs based on its own chip architecture technology, known as Zen.

Taking advantage of the latest DDR5 standard, Samsung states that the new chips will reach speeds of 7.2Gbps. This will allow the new RAM modules to process two 30GB Full HD movies in just one second.

The 12nm chips are manufactured using a multi-layer AUV lithography process, which is more expensive than the DUV lithography machinery traditionally used for memory production. Samsung has also used a new high-dielectric material that increases cell capacity, and a proprietary design technology that improves circuit properties.

Samsung will start mass production of 12nm DDR5 chips in 2023. Samsung’s target market segments include next-generation computing, data centers, and AI-based systems.

Companies operating in those markets will then be able to achieve faster performance, with increased sustainability and energy efficiency.

“The new 12nm memory will be a key factor in pushing the market to a higher level,” said Joyong Lee, executive vice president of memory products at Samsung.

“Creating new products often requires close collaboration with industry partners to push the boundaries of technology,” said Joe McCurry, senior vice president of AMD.
