After more than 20 years of dedicated work, she quit Angelina Jolie as Special Envoyto the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, wanting to “work with different parties” and on broader humanitarian issues, she explained.
“After 20 years of working alongside the United Nations, I feel the time has come to work with others, and to engage directly with refugees and local organisations,” the actress said in a statement issued by UNHCR today, Friday.
“I will continue to do what I can over the coming years to support refugees and other displaced people,” she added.
“Angelina Jolie has long been an outstanding partner of UNHCR on humanitarian issues,” said UNHCR President Filippo Grandi, adding, “We are grateful to her for her commitment to us over the decades and for the difference she has made to refugees and those forced to flee their countries.”
Jolie, one of the most popular stars in Hollywood, has accomplished More than 60 field missions Over the years, she has benefited from her fame and media mobilization during her missions, in favor of the refugee cause.
The statement stated that Jolie “She recently visited Yemen and Burkina Faso with UNHCR, with the aim of interviewing displaced people affected by “the world’s two most underfunded and undercover emergencies”.
Jolie did not give details of her future humanitarian commitments.
For his part, Grandi said, “I realize that the refugee issue will remain dear to her heart, and I am sure that it will carry the same passion as a body working on humanitarian issues.”
Jolie began working with UNHCR in 2001 and was appointed as its Goodwill Ambassador in 2012.
