Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Activists on social media circulated pictures of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s reception of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the sidelines of the climate summit hosted by the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh.
Activists highlighted the way Pelosi grabbed Sisi’s arm.
The Egyptian presidential spokesman said, in a statement on his Facebook page, that “the meeting witnessed a one-on-one session with Pelosi, which was followed by an expanded session of talks that included the delegation accompanying her, where the (Egyptian) president welcomed the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives and the delegation to Egypt.”
The statement added that Sisi “confirmed the strategy of the decades-old relations between Egypt and the United States, and Egypt’s keenness to strengthen these relations in all their aspects, within a framework of mutual respect and common interest, especially in light of the turbulent regional reality in the region and the escalating challenges it presents, foremost of which is Instability and the threat of terrorism, as well as the negative repercussions on the economy, energy and food security caused by many successive global crises, especially the Corona pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, which calls for solidarity to confront these repercussions.
The statement added that the Egyptian President “stressed his keenness to communicate with the leaders of Congress, within the framework of coordination and consultation between the two friendly countries on various issues of common interest, reviewing the efforts made by Egypt in the field of combating terrorism and extremist ideology, and stressing Egypt’s continuation in these efforts to combat ideology. The official spokesman added that “the meeting witnessed an open dialogue between the president and members of the American delegation, where the members of the delegation were keen to listen to the president’s assessments on various regional and international issues, especially the efforts to combat terrorism over the past years in Egypt, as well as the developments of various existing crises in the region.” At the forefront of which are Libya, Yemen and Syria, and Egypt’s unremitting efforts to reach political settlements for these issues, as the President stressed that their solution revolves around ending foreign interference and the presence of armed militias and extremist groups, in parallel with supporting the concept of the state, its institutions, central governments and national armies.
